Ayurveda promotes positive thinking. In this three part series, we’ll look at positive thinking, and how to incorporate it into your life on a daily basis.

What’s your self image like? How you see yourself can have a huge impact on your outlook in life. With women especially, we often spend so much time focusing on what we don’t like about ourselves, that we forget to notice what we do like.
After having a baby, weight loss has been excruciating for me. The pounds just won’t go away. It’s so easy to focus on this. To focus on how unhappy I am with my current weight, I forget to give myself positive encouragement.
I think it’s this way for most people. But there is hope. There is a way to get beyond this type of thinking.
I’ve found the easiest method is to focus on one thing that I really like about myself. I remind myself every day, that I like this part of myself. When I look in the mirror, and negativity sets in, I try to shift my focus to the positive. Even if I can only find ONE thing that I like about myself in that moment, it’s so much better to focus on that, than everything I don’t like.
What do you like when you look in the mirror? Your eyes, your hair, your nails, your skin, your shoulders? If you really look at yourself, you will find something. Just one thing is all you need. Build from there. If you like your eyes, focus on that. Before you know it, you’ll be saying, “you know, my chin is kind of nice to”. Keep building. A positive self image is so worth the effort. Confidence of this nature is very contagious. People flock toward people who truly like themselves. I’m not talking about conceit. I’m talking about a genuine respect for yourself, and what you look like.
You may be thinking, “well what about what’s on the inside?”. You’re correct. What’s on the inside of a person is vital. Far more important than looks. But in this culture, we are so dependant on our looks. We spend billions of dollars to make ourselves look better. Our entire identity can get caught up in how we feel about our looks. So while it is most important to love yourself for who you truly are, feeling confident about the way you look can be just as important. We need to like ourselves, inside and out. Once we have an affinity for both, a positive outlook just can’t be helped.
